20,000 feet of it are going up around the perimeter. all of this ahead of the pope's arrival. >> reporter: crews are now working around the clock, installing specially made 8 by 8 steel mesh panels. today they will make up the massive wall around the central park perimeter where 80,000 are expected to gather for the pope's procession on friday. >> no one can try to climb over. >> reporter: protecting the pontiff a huge feat for the police. the scale of the security, unprecedented. pope francis is in town the same time 170 leaders are in town for the u.n. summit. this is one of the police staging areas for the huge operation. police have also been setting up security cameras, and tow trucks have hauled away cars.

largest security challenge the city has ever faced. janelle burrell has more on the measures in place. few minutes ago we saw three large trailers full of police horses making their way into central park. meanwhile, we have seen a lot of use, and they have been here all night putting up the huge fence they are be putting up 20,000 feet all around the park, ahead of the pope's arrival. crews are now working around the clock installing specially made 8 by 8 steel mesh panels that will make up a massive wall around the central park perimeter where 80,000 spectators are expected to gather for the pope's procession on friday. >> it's nonclimbable, and no one can climb over it. >> reporter: the scale of the security unprecedented. pope francis is in town at the

in the city for the u.n. general assembly. dozens of police cars now lined up at brooklyn army terminal in sunset park. police have also been setting up security cameras along the processional route, and cars have been hauled away that are violating the papal parking began that took effect tuesday morning, and cement barricades have been set up around the area where the pope will be visiting, including madison square garden where he will celebrate mass on friday. >> it's scary to think about the things that could happen if we didn't take the right measures, so i'm happy we are. >> reporter: the security plans have been month in the making, and the crews here have quite a bit of work ahead of them. we are told another set of workers are on their way to 5th avenue where they will put up similar fencing at st. patrick's cathedral.
